How AI Mastering Actually Works
There is no magic behind automatic mastering. Beatzucker combines standardized audio measurements, transparent adaptive rules and a documented DSP chain. But what actually happens under the hood?
Step 1: Analyzing the Track
Before touching anything, the analysis engine thoroughly scans the track. Beatzucker measures:
Integrated LUFS: how loud is the track overall?
True Peak: how close is the reconstructed peak to digital full scale?
Spectral analysis: where does the frequency energy sit?
Dynamics (crest factor, DR and LRA): how dynamic is the track, or is it already heavily compressed?
Stereo field: how wide is the mix, and are there phase concerns?
BPM and key: additional information for analysis and reporting.
Step 2: Calculating Suitable Parameters
Based on that analysis, the mastering engine calculates the ideal settings, taking into account:
The genre you selected (Electronic, Hip-Hop, Rock, Jazz, Classical, and more) — each carries its own typical sonic traits and loudness norms.
The target platform (Spotify, Apple Music, Club, Broadcast) — each with its own LUFS targets and True Peak ceilings.
The track's current state — a mix that's already heavily compressed needs a different approach than a dynamic one.
The output is a concrete parameter set: EQ curves, compression ratios, stereo width values, limiter threshold, and export LUFS.
Step 3: The DSP Chain Does the Work
Those calculated parameters now run through a multi-stage DSP pipeline (Digital Signal Processing). At Beatzucker, every track passes through 12 stages:
1. Input Gain: normalizing input level 2. High-Pass Filter: removing sub-frequencies below 20 Hz 3. Low Shelving EQ: shaping the bass range 4. Mid Parametric EQ: correcting the midrange 5. High Shelving EQ: raising or cutting the highs 6. Multiband Compressor: compressing frequency bands independently 7. Stereo Processing: Mid/Side processing for stereo width 8. Harmonic Exciter: adding overtones for warmth and presence 9. Glue Compressor: gluing the overall mix together 10. Pre-Limiter EQ: final frequency correction ahead of the limiter 11. True-Peak Limiter: setting the ceiling to −1 dBTP 12. Dithering: minimizing quantization noise during format export
AI Mastering vs. a Human Engineer
For high-budget productions, AI mastering isn't a replacement for a human engineer. But for independent artists, demos, SoundCloud uploads, and streaming releases, it plays to some clear strengths:
