Why Your Track Sounds Quieter on Spotify Than Others
You've uploaded the track, you're happy with it — but sitting in a playlist next to other songs, it comes across noticeably quieter and somehow flat. It's a classic frustration for independent artists, and the cause has a name: Spotify's loudness normalization.
What Spotify's Loudness Normalization Actually Does
Spotify brings every track to −14 LUFS (integrated). Say your master sits at −10 LUFS (too loud) — Spotify pulls it back by 4 dB, and you lose loudness and energy in the process.
The reverse, though, doesn't work the same way: if your track sits at −18 LUFS (too quiet), Spotify will NOT boost it up. It just stays quiet. The result: next to other tracks, your song reads as weaker and less present — even when the mix itself is solid.
The Loudness War and Its Legacy
Before streaming took over, there was the so-called Loudness War: labels and producers cranked their tracks to maximum loudness to stand out on radio or CD. What that left behind was a wave of hypercompressed, dynamics-starved tracks, typically sitting around −7 to −9 LUFS.
Streaming platforms shut that arms race down through normalization. Tracks mastered in that old loudness-war style don't sound louder on Spotify anymore — they just get turned down. Even so, plenty of producers still master too hot out of habit, simply because they don't understand how normalization works.
The Fix: Master Cleanly to −14 LUFS
The fix is simple: master your track to −14 LUFS (integrated) with a True Peak no higher than −1 dBTP. Do that, and Spotify's normalization effectively has nothing left to adjust — your track plays back exactly the way you mastered it.
Rule of thumb for streaming mastering:
• Integrated LUFS: −14 LUFS (Spotify), −16 LUFS (Apple Music) • True Peak: −1 dBTP maximum • Avoid limiting that pushes dynamic range below −3 LUFS
