Understanding LUFS: Loudness for the Streaming Era
Master your first track and sooner or later you'll run into the term LUFS. It stands for Loudness Units relative to Full Scale, and it's become the global standard for measuring loudness across broadcast and streaming. Ignore it, and your track either sits too quiet in the player or gets automatically pulled down by the platform — either way, you lose energy.
What LUFS Actually Measures
LUFS (Loudness Units relative to Full Scale) doesn't track peak level — it tracks perceived loudness over time, which lines up much more closely with what your ears register. A plain dB peak reading, by contrast, only tells you about the single loudest instant, not the overall impression.
The standard comes from EBU R128 (European Broadcasting Union) and ITU-R BS.1770. It has effectively replaced the older RMS method and made fair, cross-platform loudness comparisons possible.
LUFS vs. dB vs. RMS: The Real Difference
These three terms get mixed up constantly. Here's a clean breakdown of each:

Target Loudness Across Major Platforms
Every platform normalizes to its own LUFS target. Come in above it and you get turned down; come in below it and it just stays quiet — platforms don't turn tracks up. So aim to land as close to the target as you reasonably can:
- Spotify: −14 LUFS integrated, True Peak capped at −1 dBTP
- Apple Music: −16 LUFS, True Peak capped at −1 dBTP
- YouTube: −14 LUFS, True Peak capped at −1 dBTP
- TikTok: −14 LUFS
- Amazon Music: −14 LUFS
- SoundCloud: −11 LUFS, no automatic normalization applied
- Club system / DJ set: −6 LUFS for maximum loudness
Measuring LUFS Inside Your DAW
Most current DAWs ship with a built-in LUFS meter, or you can add a plugin. Popular free options include the Youlean Loudness Meter or the meter built into iZotope Ozone.
