Stereo Width Explained: Getting Your Mix to Translate Everywhere
Two tracks can share identical LUFS numbers and both be mixed cleanly, yet sound completely different the moment you switch from a single speaker to headphones. The reason is almost always the stereo field: too narrow and the track loses its sense of space, too wide or phase-inconsistent and it can fall apart on mono playback.
The Stereo Field: How Left and Right Create Space
Every track you hear plays back over two channels, left and right. How different those two channels are from each other is what determines how wide the track feels: nearly identical signals collapse toward the center and read as mono, while bigger differences between L and R create a sense of openness and space.
Mastering controls this through Mid/Side processing. The Mid channel carries whatever is shared between both channels — the mono core of the signal — and the Side channel isolates only the difference between left and right, which is the actual stereo information.
Mono Compatibility Isn't an Afterthought
A significant share of listeners never actually hear your music in stereo — phone speakers, small Bluetooth speakers, and smart speakers like Alexa devices typically output mono. If your track has phase issues, entire frequency ranges can vanish on these devices, or the overall tone shifts noticeably.
Where does this come from? Usually the Side signal in Mid/Side processing is pushed too hard, or there's a phase offset between the left and right channels to begin with. When those channels get summed down to mono, the affected frequencies partially or fully cancel each other out.
